I was excited to receive this question asked by the guru of presentation herself, Ms. Jacqueline Whitmore (@etiquetteexpert).  I admire the Very Hip Etiquette Expert’s (“VHEE”) updated tips on how to be socially
graceful.  She epitomizes grace and
manners as well as entrepreneurial success.  The thought
of giving her my thoughts on what shoes to wear was one I couldn’t even dream of considering.  

I immediately went to the drawing board…

 I.  First, I
considered what [little] I know about her style as well as her professionalresponsibilities as an etiquette expert.

I came up with the following list:
·  
She
sets an example.  She leads subtly
and politely.
·  
She
is busy and efficient, yet seems to do everything effortlessly and with grace.
·  
She
is appropriately dressed and polished for many social events occurring back to
back to back.
·  
She
is au courant, festive, attractive and engaging. At the same time however, she
is conscientious about drawing too much attention to herself.
·  
She
is always courteous and honors tradition but is never ever outdated.
·  
Compromising
her posture and gait with uncomfortable shoes is unacceptable.
·  
She
must continue making big strides with perfectly put-together ensembles.
II.  Then, I immediately came up with three brands
that align with @etiquetteexpert’s image in aesthetic, ladylike manners and
personality.
My top
choice was Kate Spade.
III.   Next I created three general categories:
a.
casual
b.
professional
c.
social
event





A.  Casual  
Suggestion: heels (or flats) in colors that add wit to understated classics.


I picture VHEE (Very Hip Etiquette Expert) wearing tailored cropped denim to add a modern and youthful element to an otherwise “Easter Sunday-ish” cardi- twinset.  The examples in images 1 and 2 have simple silhouettes and are understated enough to pull off a bright shoe without being visually shocking.

B. Professional
 Suggestion: Rich colors, soft leather, and a hint of Old World craftsmanship that convey refined taste and gravitas. 




There are effective ways to convey success and professionalism without looking like a contestant on The Apprentice.  


Pinstripe suits and the basic Navy, Charcoal and Black were the VHEE’s “training wheels”.  At this point in her career, she requires a fashion identity that reflects her sophisticated style and expertise in presentation.  Images 3 and 4 are sophisticated and professional without looking like a corporate cartoon.  At this stage in her career, the VHEE can exude accountability and expertise without the aid of pinstripes and penny loafers.

C. Social
Suggestion: Festive, fun and quality footwear that can dazzle the crowd without being the loudest one in the room.



Images 5 and 6 are perfect for holiday get-togethers with your social circle.  The silhouettes are ladylike and feminine without being outdated.  It’s beautiful to be sentimental. Balance your 1950’s references with pieces from our time period.  As I mentioned, Kate Spade does this with wit and taste.  Remember: too many of grandma’s antiquated heirloom pieces can be reminiscent of mothballs instead of nostalgia.

Overall, our Etiquette Expert will always be the paragon of class and good taste.  She’s a delightful example of how to reach success with style….in fancy, high-heeled shoes!

Adding
lean muscle should be a priority in all fitness programs.  Muscle mass increases metabolism, and is key to losing weight and keeping it off.







NOTE: These are basic guidelines.  It is recommended that you speak to your nutritionist for in-depth information. 

CLIFF’S NOTES VERSION- EATING TO BE LEAN:
1. Eat 40/30/30
Each meal should contain the following ratio:
  • 30%-40% protein
  • 20-30% Carbohydrates
  • 25-35% fat
This
ratio allows nutrients to work together during digestion to stabilize blood
sugar. This ratio also optimal for maximum absorption of nutrients into the small intestine.
2. Eat every 3-4 hours. 
This creates stable blood sugar levels throughout the day. 
This provides your body with a steady stream of protein which is essential in creating  an anabolic (or, “muscle
building”) environment.
3. Pay attention to your proteins!
Incorporate a high-quality complete protein*
into each meal to provide the nine amino acids that are essential for adding
muscle tissue. 
*Not all protein are equal  
Complete proteins, like those found in meats, fish, chicken, eggs, soybeans,
and quinoa, are more bioavailable than incomplete proteins like those found in
most vegetables, beans and grains.

Corporate America only “pays” for those that have positions that are at a higher level, which to me, seems terribly unfair. We all contribute to the company’s success and since we are the right hand to the Sr. Executive that is creating the decisions, we should absolutely be mentored and have that person guide us in either how we can help them in a better way and ourselves for the future in that company. 

I CAN say I have had one or two wonderful bosses that have taken the time to mentor me the best they can, in the time small period alloted and I have asked them to. But it was not a initiative. So, I ask anyone and everyone that I work with, “What is it that I can do better, what have they done in their careers to get them where they are, etc.”

So, I would like to know how different a sponsor would be , as these people also advocated for me? Thanks so much!

Hi –
  I’ll look for the recent study published regarding the effects of sponsorships vs. mentorships in a professional woman’s trajectory and send it to you (or post it).**
  Unfortunately, whether anyone “pays” to facilitate these relationships or not, it’s really up to ourselves to create opportunities and become visible to the organization in which we belong.
  I, personally, have had professional mentors in my industry which happened “organically”, as well as limited experience in a mentorship formally arranged by my previous firm.  
  Obviously, there are many factors and variables that would affect the outcome of each relationship.  To me, a professional “mentor” or confidante or even an inspiring leader to observe is better than none at all.  My experience suggests that genuine bonds easily form when there is natural curiosity by the mentee, natural leadership abilities in the mentor and some common ground and chemistry between the two.  Surprisingly, some inspiration have come from those in leadership positions with whom I had very limited interaction – they led via behavior and motivation.  And, their work and character are obvious when observing their behavior and interactions with others over a long span of time.  I’ve gotten close to a few senior level professionals my industry by virtue of having worked in the same field and city for ten years.  These are informal “mentors” on whom I can rely to serve as ‘soundingboards’ for myself when I have specific questions, and they have consistently provided me with honest and good advice.  
  As with any relationship, a lot of it is trial and error.  I’ve been disappointed, betrayed and let down by professionals I’ve trusted.  No one goes to work to make ‘friends’.  
  The key is to cultivate and care for these relationships as they are precious [I still struggle with effectively demonstrating this].  It’s quite generous for others to take time to provide you with insight it has taken them years of experience to acquire.  Their time shouldn’t be taken lightly.  Furthermore, it helps when you’re naturally inquisitive about the person as opposed to framing the question as a request for specific steps to take to reach the top.  I find there is no answer to the question, “how can I reach the stars?”.  To each their own.  However, regular conversations with a trust professional in your field (not working in your office, preferably) can provide you with an extra set of eyes to your specific situation, thus allowing you to have a wider perspective before making big career decisions.
  I’m naturally curious about people.  I love reading biographies.  And, I’m the same when I meet people who I find fascinating – whether their “higher up the chain” or nowhere near a chain.


I read an excellent quote yesterday paraphrasing Cornell West’s comment.  I like it because it reminds me not to lose sight of the bigger things in life and who besides ourselves to consider:


Stop obsessing over only the glass ceiling & remember people in the basement & on the seventh floor.

NEW YORK (August 17, 2011)—For women especially, it takes more than meeting expectations to get noticed in today’s workplace. Female employees who work hard and play by the rules are often overlooked when it comes to plum assignments and big promotions. Have you ever thought about being a beauty consultant in the entertainment industry?  We interviewed the Dept. Head of Make-up for some of the biggest shows on television to gain insight on how to reach the stars in Hollywood.



3P: What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

My first film [project as a make-up artist] out of Joe Blasco Make up school was “Galaxina”:  a very low budget feature that reaped great rewards especially professional experience.


3P: What is one thing you now know that you wish you knew about your industry when you first started?
Never date Actors.
3P: Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?
The late Dixie Carter (actor) was an influential person to me.  It was an honor to be in her presence.  She provided me with knowledge and tools that were useful beyond my career….
   
She demanded excellence and I was committed to producing consistently excellent results for her as I am now.
3P: What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?
Keep personal life personal. Work is work.
3P: What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?
Not getting my cosmetology licenses sooner.  Education is important if you want to continue to stay relevant and competitive. 
Although I learned a lot through experience and hands-on application, I eventually got my Esthetician’s licenses (after working on “Will & Grace” for eight seasons!), and it has provided my professional practice with even greater rewards.

3P: What is the best part of your job?
Aside from working alongside the most beautiful and talented people in the world, the best part of my job is getting paid to do something I’m passionate about. 
All work should be done with passion.  Passion produces consistently excellent results!

3P: What do you look for when hiring someone? 
I love those with excellent work ethic and who take initiative.
It’s helpful when a teammate does what is needed on his or her own accord without waiting for direction. 
I appreciate working around creative people because of their intuition to help when help is needed.


3P: What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?
     
1.  Before putting all your investment in a career in entertainment do your research!  


Learn about the industry as a whole (producers, actors, culture, etc…).
2.  Get your degrees and licenses as soon as possible.  
3.    Be realistic about how much you’ll make.  There are very few people in creative fields in highly competitive and oversaturated fields who can make a living from their craft alone. 
 Be prepared for the ups and downs, lack of job security, long hiatuses, strikes, etc…
4.  Educate yourself on personal finance, budgeting and saving for retirement.  
5.  Continue learning.  When you think you’re the best, it usually means you have a lot to go.

Happiness is good for your health—so how do you keep a positive self image even as you age?


AAbout this post: Nancy Hovde is a life coach, author and blogger at UberEmpowermentBlog.com.  She lives in Redondo Beach and I’ve known her for almost ten years.  I admire her life-juggling abilities – her discipline, work ethic, positive attitude and resilience.  Happy birthday, Nancy.




I was searching for the perfect birthday card for my 93-year-old grandma at Card De A in Redondo Beach, and it reminded me of what’s become an annual tradition. Each year I ask her what words of wisdom she acquired from the year before. This year, the focus was on maintaining her level of happiness through humor. She makes fun of her memory lapses.
Her inner strength takes my breath away, especially when I notice her small, frail frame. I’m grateful that my loving and supportive parents surround her. Optimism, laughter, being around supportive family members and positive emotions can counteract many harmful effects at any age, especially in our sixties, seventies, eighties and beyond.

We don’t need to wait until we reach a certain age to acquire wisdom and humor; even as we age, we can begin to practice what can help us develop an optimistic outlook on life. Aside from eating right and exercising, it is awareness and knowledge of life experiences, changes in our expectations of life and remembering our sense of humor that contributes to aging gracefully and joyfully.
Many of us would speculate that positive emotions may directly affect health by altering the chemical balance of the body. We can start today, and as we age, we can learn to live more in the moment, appreciate life and experience a sense of satisfaction and well being. Our ability to maintain happiness and peace of mind depends on our attitude.


Here are some tips you can begin using today to ensure a positive attitude about life and aging:


Listen carefully to yourself. 
If you have put yourself down for as long as you can remember—perhaps even since childhood—a lifetime of negative subliminal messages can take their toll by turning you into a pessimist. I encourage you to try to spend one to three days writing down the phrases you use in your “self talk.” Chances are you will find that you repeat several phrases over and over again that reinforce your negative image of yourself. Once you are aware of these phrases, you can change them.
If an issue is not resolved, it will continue to fester—you will relive the negative emotions tied to that issue over and over again. 

Write about what you feel in your journal for about 15 minutes a day for three days. 
Once you begin to write, don’t stop until the time is up. This exercise will help you organize your thoughts and get negative ones out of your system. Notice how much better you feel about yourself at the end of three days.

Seek out new opportunities. 
Discover new challenges each month. You can feel optimistic when you always have a goal to achieve that’s just over the horizon. When you begin to get close to reaching that goal, set a new one. This allows you to keep moving consistently ahead.
Keep fun in your life by eliminating monotony, a sure killer of optimism. Try to do one new thing every week or month. Try a new coffee shop or restaurant, visit a museum, try a new activity or sport, or go to a book signing, lecture or community event. A friend and I enjoyed dinner at Turquoise in Redondo Beach. This was her first time eating there. It was fun to see her enthusiasm and delight when she discovered a new Turquoise in Redondo Beach. This was her first time eating there. Look for a new wonder of nature each day. 
I marvel each time I am on Portuguese Bend Trail and see the views of Palos Verdes. It’s a tranquil escape.

Learn to laugh at yourself. 
Yes, sad events and situations will come up in life, so allow yourself to experience grief—just don’t let it control you. Lend a hand to someone worse off than yourself by volunteering at a hospital or visiting a shelter. Try meditating for five minutes each day. During that time, 

Make a mental list of at least three great things that happened to you that day.
Simply recalling one episode of anger can depress the immune system; however, remembering a time when you compassionate or caring can enhance your immune system. So laugh a lot! You’ll heal your body and your mind—and feel joyful at any age.

Are you settling for ‘good enough’? (links, images, videos)

misery isn’t happiness’s foe; ‘good enough’ is – in your personal and professional life! 

You’ve heard the comparison before:  a job search is like looking for a mate.

If this analogy is anywhere near accurate, then I’m currently reading the job seeker’s version of Neil Strauss’ “Rules of the Game”.
.
His name is Harper.  And according to the story’s main character, he’s “big in the right places and small in the right places”.  The book’s title is “Harper’s Rules”, and the story is an entertaining account of the relationship between a superstar recruit and her superstar recruiter.

I don’t have an opinion on whether or not I see job-seeking as completely akin to mate-seeking, however, I agree there are at least a few similarities.  More importantly for myself, however, are the witty Harper-isms that make me laugh out loud and take notes.

Some examples of what we call “Harper-isms”:

“You’re riding Secretariat, love.  You don’t need to get on the merry-go-round.”
.
“BOTTOM LINE:  If you’re acting like you’re leaving your job, you’re leaving your job.  It’s just a matter of timing and opportunity.  Sometimes we do the right things before we’ve figured out why they’re right.”
.
“Are you staying because they “need you right now” and you “can’t do that to your colleagues?”  Are you disillusioned  but held hostage by guilt?”
.
and my personal favorite…
.
“misery isn’t happiness’s foe; ‘good enough’ is.” !!!



Some of “Harper’s Rules” on finding the best path to your dream job:

  1. Put your personal network on notice.
  2. Use direct, simple language.
  3. Network with two headhunters that specialize in your niche.
  4. Do your homework.
  5. Your resume is a highlight film; it’s SportsCenter, not the unedited game footage.
  6. Your resume is an advertisement; it is not an affidavit.
  7. Don’t accept a counteroffer after terminating your relationship with your employer.
  8. Cultures don’t change.  You assimilate or you leave.
  9. If you’ve stopped laughing, quit immediately.
  10. If none of the original reasons why you took the job are still valid, or you settled for less than what you were meant to do, your dream will haunt you till you leave.

Yup.   He’s a sexy recruiter alright.  And, I like his style (Apologies in advance for the plethora of Harper-isms you’ll be seeing in our tweets as I finish reading the book).

A well-mapped out Strategic Planning engagement can be enormously productive in helping an organization adapt and move forward.  
Considering a Strategic Planning meeting? The following are some insights into the process, which I hope you will find useful. 

1. DO Engage in Regular Strategic Planning. The world is changing so fast that strategies for success that made sense even a year ago may no longer hold true. Re-visiting and clarifying the organization’s mission, values, goals, and strategies on a regular basis helps to create a strong framework that will allow the organization to be flexible and effective in dealing with change.  (create a plan!)
2. DO Hire Professional Help.  Without an outside coach or facilitator, most groups get sidetracked or bogged down, and waste a lot of time. An outside professional has the ability to stimulate the group to get out of their usual ways of doing things, seeing things, and interacting with each other. And they will push the group to stay focused and complete its agenda. (ask for help or find resources to help you)

3. DON’T Expect To Coast Through It. An effective Strategic Planning meeting takes commitment and hard work. It will likely include pre-work, and often some carefully chosen reading assignments. The meeting itself may span several hours — or days. And once all this is done, the real work begins: holding oneself and others accountable to move forward with the actions committed to.  (be realistic with results and the amount of work…)

4. DO Expect That Sparks Will Fly. Tempers may flair, tears may be shed. Again, a skilled facilitator or coach will help the group navigate through the heated emotions and channel that passion into breakthrough creative thinking and action.   (prepare for heated disagreements and focus on your goals)

5. DON’T Be Surprised When Resistance Appears. As much as people clamor for things to change, most of the time we hope that the results can be different butwithout us having to be different. An important step in the process of redefining strategy and goals may be gaining awareness of our own resistance to changing how we do things.  

6. DO Notice How the Cream Rises to the Top. It becomes clear very quickly that there are those who just like to hear themselves talk — and those who are willing to take action. The structure and clarity of this kind of work empowers individual performers, which benefits the entire organization.  

7. DO Include Everyone. While the leadership of an organization may be most involved in determining the Strategic Plan, for this plan to actually work all levels of the organization must be engaged and included. People support what they help to create. 

8. DON’T Neglect to Celebrate. Planning and execution are hard work — especially if your goal is to take the organization down a new path. Take time out to celebrate your early wins!   (Acknowledge your small accomplishments – they are important)

9. DO create goals that you can measure. How long will it take? What resources are needed? What is the desired outcome?  What gets measured gets done. (Quantify)

10. DON’T Stop Now. Become a Culture of Constant Improvement. Strategic Planning allows us to respond actively to the question: How can we be better at what we do? As innovation is stimulated, the organization becomes more attractive to all its constituents — staff, members, clients, shareholders. (Kaizen)

  1. Avoid sugar (what?!?! – Is there any way around this?!)…
  2. Moderate your carbohydrates per meal
  3. Eat appropriate calories per meal
  4. Eat at correct meal intervals of every 3-4 hours
  5. Avoid trans-fats and hydrogenated oils
  6. Moderate alcohol intake
  7. Add lean muscle to your body with strength training
  8. Burn fat stores through cardiovascular training
  9. Eat whole foods that are high in fiber for improved digestion
  10. Be consistent in your diet and fitness habits





Food for thought…

…in other words, “have some perspective!”.  There are much more important things in life than your job.  Take care of those priorities, too.

Faiza Seth is not your usual CEO.  She has flowing black hair, 40+ pairs of Louboutins and she frequently shares beauty secrets in fashion magazines.

But the Hyderabad-born executive has more to her than meets the eye: After a stint at Lehman Brothers in Hong Kong and obtaining an MBA from Stanford University, Ms. Seth, 33, moved to London where she set up her own business, the architecture and luxury interior design firm Casa Forma in 2007.
Ms. Seth spoke to India Real Time about the Indian market for high-end interior design, shared tips for young female entrepreneurs and explained how beauty and business don’t always go well together.  Edited excerpts.
IRT: What made you decide to expand in India?
Ms. Seth: I am Indian so I can understand the country culturally, it is easier for me to work here than in the rest of the BRICs. My family is based in Delhi so I have a network to start off with that I don’t have in Brazil, Russia or China. Also I find people in India have been exposed to global design and trends. Here there is a demand for an international design aesthetic which offers high quality, bespoke design, luxury, and value.
IRT: How does India’s luxury market compares to London’s?
Ms. Seth: In London there is a high demand for property. There, I get requests like crazy for second homes from clients in Russia, China, the Middle East and India. The Indian market is a little bit more price sensitive. At the same time it’s hard to differentiate between locations because people who want that service want the highest quality no matter where they are.
IRT: How are you adapting your design concept to the Indian market?
Ms. Seth: The broader concept is a global design aesthetic. But we have to adapt our designs to make them more doable in India: We have to take into consideration environmental factors like weather and dust. For instance, you can’t use light colors in Delhi because they will be very hard to maintain with the dust and pollution. We pick darker shades.
IRT: What is the design concept behind the New Delhi showhouse?
Ms. Seth: It’s basically modern colonial with some Art Deco and contemporary influences. This includes high ceilings, dark woods like mahogany, marbles and antique doors.
IRT: What tips do you have for young female entrepreneurs in India?
Ms. Seth: Young women need to follow their passion and do what they enjoy … this ensures the greatest probability of success. It is critical that young women entrepreneurs get outside work experience in a large professional set up to bring in discipline, work ethic. Finally women entrepreneurs should start small with low costs and build their businesses up step by step.
IRT: What are the main challenges of doing business in India?
Ms. Seth: Doing business successfully in India can be challenging because of the lack of infrastructure and inertia in the approval processes. Therefore it is crucial to have a strong compliance person who can help manage the environment and ensures adherence to local laws.
IRT: You never leave your house without…?
Ms. Seth: My Blackberry, which is my lifeline to Casa Forma. It’s the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see before I sleep.
IRT: Can beauty be a disadvantage in a business environment?
Ms. Seth: Beauty can sometimes be a disadvantage in business because people tend to think beauty and intelligence are often mutually exclusive. However, good educational and professional qualifications can often mitigate this stereotype.

Wikipedia tells us that the designer got her start by working part-time at a retail store, Contempo Casuals, at the age of 14…Her trajectory spiked exponentially upward from there…

Amazing work by Dina Goldstein, “Fallen Princesses” examines the untold story of princesses lives after the happily ever-after.

These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The ‘…happily ever after’ is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues… Disney’s perfect Princesses [are] juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.

Famous photographer, Annie Leibovitz, is also credited for her beautiful work photographing celebrities as Disney Princesses.  Let’s examine the different messages their images convey:

I just listened to a podcast about how to ask for help.  If you’re like me, it sometimes makes me feel weird to ask friends for help.  Especially when I need it.

The podcast below provides the following tips on how to ask your professional network for help when you’re job-hunting.

1.  Email is ok* (*not mass/spam email!) – not ideal, but ‘okay’.

it starts in my toes…

“… makes me crinkle my nose…” (this is how I describe feeling amazing)
I feel absolutely amazing.  Why?  I’ve accomplished the objectives I set for myself for the week (and scheduled smaller tasks throughout the next few days), I had a delicious and healthy meal, read a couple chapters of a good book, reconnected with supportive and genuine friends, submitted my resume, attended to other responsibilities while getting an opportunity to “flex” some valuable attributes in myself that I haven’t been able to in some time…
Days that make me “crinkle my nose” are top priority, and I make sure to schedule them strategically following tough weeks.  
Seriously. 
I reserved a portion of today for less demanding chores like drycleaning, laundry, household chores, returning calls to friends, etc…  I do have stressful obligations on my plate, however, for the next three hours, I choose to “responsibly ignore” them as a proactive and conscious form of self-preservation.  The objective is to shut down stress by being around inspiring people..or intellectually stimulating ideas…or existing in an environment filled with “things I love” (i.e. the outdoors, the stationery store, indoors watching movies with gorgeous imagery, museums, gardens, etc…) to bring me back to center.  When time’s up, I’m back to focused work, appointments, stress, bills, etc…
Do you set aside time to do the things you enjoy and be around friends (not associated with your job and/or goal to “network”) who are supportive and trustworthy?  
Existing in a “non-threatening” space where you can have your guard down and be as carefree as a child (read:  without being judged) is healthy and promotes “good” behavior in adults.  A recent research by Sreedhari Desai and Francesca Gino published by the Harvard Business Review found that an environment reminiscent of childhood encouraged adults to behave more ethically (link to article:  Adults Behave Better When Teddy Bears are in the Room).

3P: Fair enough. What we really want to know are some tips to looking fabulous. You’ve done hair for celebrities, TV show projects, music videos and as well as being the primary personal hair stylist for musicians on tour…For the everyday corporate rockstar who can’t wear a fabulous pink Afro-puff to the office, what are some tips to always looking chic without looking out of place?



GUI SAYS:
1. Get haircuts regularly – Fresh haircuts and color make as big of an impact as a facelift. Think about it. Your hair frames your face. When dark conservative suits create uniformity in the workplace, one’s haircut can subtly convey your own professional brand and individuality.


2. Communicate clearly with your stylist – bring magazine clippings with images of women whose hairstyles you like…it’s important that the model’s face shape, skin tone and hair texture are similar to yours. Don’t expect a stylist to turn your mullet into Slash’s Rockin’ ‘do.


3. Consider your lifestyle when choosing a style – If your daily life involves wearing a construction hat, it’s not practical to ask for a bleached and overly-coiffed ‘do (a la Gwen Stefani) especially if you can’t maintain weekly root touch ups.

Hello sexy ladies!


In the olden days it wasn’t considered attractive to have tan skin [insert source here].
Today no man wants to see your “paste-y” ass [replace “ass” with a rated-PG term] in a bikini. But a free ticket to the skin cancer clinic isn’t the only way to be a bronzed goddess — you can achieve the same St. Tropez-vacation glow with self tanners!!!


The latest self-tanners are flawless. Technological and scientific advancement don’t just benefit boring industries like farming and the energy sector — they also benefit the gorgeous!!!

Lindsay Lohan may like her self tanner so orange it matches her fire crotch, but YOU don’t have to. (Nor do you have to have to be the smelly kid no one wants to sit next to).



My favorite self tanner, Kate Sommerville’s tan towels, are available at Sephora. (Spoiler: They are not cheap). 



Although there are cheaper options available, the benefits from these KS tan towels make the additional cost worth it.  One, they have no odor.  Second, their result is a natural and pretty sun-kissed color.  And, last, the tan lasts at least five days!!!

Here’s some pointers on how to apply the product to produce picture-perfect-pretty results:

1. lather your body with an emollient moisturizer paying special attention to your knees, hands, and feet.

2. apply the self-tanner using your “tan towel”to your chest, then your neck. 
(Note:  you can use it on your moisturized face and the tan is subtle and beautiful)
 **The trick with any self tanner is rubbing the same places over and over ad nauseam to prevent streaking. 
3.  Apply the product around your neck and ears (avoiding your hairline)
4. When you get to your hands, either stop at wrists or make a tight fist and just do the top of the hands before the knuckles.

5. Apply the same principle above to apply the self-tanner around the feet, stoping before you reach your toes. 
6.  Apply product to your knees rubbing vigorously over and over (make sure your knees are bent).

**Try to reserve different sections of the tan towel for certain areas. This will guarantee one towel tans the whole body.**

7. Continue to apply the solution to the same spots. Lift your arms and make sure you get the underside of your forearms and upper arms.

We love surfer/model Malia Jones (“MJ”).  She’s picture perfect and an incredible athlete.

Her physique is an example of strength, flexibility and womanhood.  She’s athletic and lean yet has the curves to fill out a bathing suit properly.  She captures [in “guy language”] “the beauty trifecta”.  And, in the catty world of modeling, competitive surfing and life in general, the “beauty trifecta” is a winning strategy.

So we ask our friend, Adam, what we can add to our current resistance training workout to increase flexibility and establish our own winning image “strategy”.  We’d like to have long, runway-model legs to make big beautiful strides in this world.

Adam examined whether or not our workouts incorporate one of the basic elements of exercise:  stretching.

Do you balance your resistance training with stretches?  “…Well…um, ‘yes’?”, we reluctantly lied.  He didn’t buy it for a second.  Thankfully, he provided us with some examples of basic stretches.  Thanks, Adam.

Stressed?
Frustrated because some people just don’t “get it”?  Put your boxing gloves down.  No need to break a nail over some things.

We get it.  When we’re busy and under a lot of stress, we get into tons of petty fights with others.  Since this isn’t productive and only adds further stress in our lives, we decided we’d figure out how to prevent from turning mild situations into ‘pi$$ing contest$’ with those we interact with.  Even if you’re a pissing-contest-champion, winning pointless arguments rarely ever helps anyone move closer to their long-term goals.

One way to prevent unnecessary stress is to improve communication.

For instance, before getting upset with others, see if you can communicate what you need effectively and in a manner the other person can understand clearly.

An article published by the Mayo Clinic (below) observes behaviors leading to stress and frustration in relationships.  The article suggests preventing conflict by communicating your needs assertively without making the other person feel attacked.

As it turns out, people don’t usually care to hear what an insulting person has to say and will dismiss it – even if it is a good point.

Synopsis:  Communicate what you want and need without making others feel like they’ve done something wrong.

Rather than:
I hate the way you speak 100 decibels louder than necessary when you’re on the phone…It’s so annoying!


Another option:
Would you mind making your call in the other room for 30 minutes?  I’d like to finish reading/watching TV/doing sit ups and I find it hard to focus when I hear your exciting conversation with [such-and-such].
(note:  do not say this in a sarcastic and mean-spirited tone)

Finding and expressing one’s “voice” succintly is tough enough.  It becomes even more difficult when expressing your voice on a new medium… while learning how to communicate using said medium.

I’m not just sharpening my pencil and erasing words…I’ve personally spent day and night researching other sites, reading pounds and pounds of books about HTML, CSS, blogging, design, art, etc…, interviewing programmers and bloggers, and updating pre-formatted templates by learning how to read CSS and HTML codes (not my native language).

Before this project, I had no idea what “user experience” technically meant.  Let’s just say I have much more respect for programmers and what they do to make sites “legible” and “pretty” to a wide range of people.

With all that whining (and hard work), I now consider myself ‘princess of blogging’, and her majesty needs new outfits for her new role.

Office-appropriate version (Reiss)


The royal blue sheath dress above is a beautiful option for running
around town during the workday.  We recently discovered the line “Reiss”, an actual favorite of Princess Kate Middleton’s.  The tailored cut makes this dress flattering and feminine preventing that I’m-desperately-trying-to-look-older-and-more-professional “look” that I used to rock ten years ago (good bye, ugly suits!).

This dress works [pun unintended] at the office (+ blazer), after work get-togethers, or (if he’s lucky) during your date this weekend (- pumps; + strappy sandals).

The
cliched “Little Black Dress” is a cliche because it is undeniably a “must-have”  piece that belongs in every woman’s closet.  A flattering black dress,
or as pop-cultural fashion-themed shows call it, “the LBD” [enter Heidi
Klum], is the Swiss-army knife of your dress repertoire.  Its “look” can
vary greatly just by updating the key accessories one wears with it: 
shoes, handbag, jewelry, date, etc…If dresses are the solution to rushing out of the house with no time to pair separates, the  “LBD” is the optimal solution for busy go-getters.  Why do you think busy New Yorkers like to wear black?  Efficiency.


What
jet-setting princess wouldn’t want to add an element of efficiency to
her dressing ritual for the [unlikely] days she’s running [a tad bit] late?

Another
essential item for socializing princesses (whether imaginary or
legendary) is a classic cocktail dress.  The dress above is another design by Reiss
which can be worn to a dinner date or dinner-party.  The classic A-line
is a feminine and traditional choice creating a ladylike image (a la
our favorite Spanish princess).  It’s feminine, elegant, flattering and efficient
(see “option 2” above).

In conclusion, during those moments when you want to reflect regal elegance, stay towards the less ostentatious side of the frilly / not-frilly continuum.
